A Message From The Nurse: Sick Day Guidelines

Posted Date: 9/07/25 (7:05 PM)

When your student says they’re not feeling well, here are some guidelines to know whether or not you should keep them home from school.

Common cold/allergy symptoms (symptoms could last a few weeks; generally not a reason to keep your student home from school):

  • runny and/or stuffy nose (congestion)

  • mild cough

  • mild sore throat

  • mild headache

  • fatigue/body aches

Colds are common, especially among school-aged children. Students are able to manage these symptoms and still be in school.

Reasons to keep your student home from school:

  • Fever (oral temperature of 100.0 or higher)

  • Vomiting

  • Diarrhea

  • Specific illness that requires an antibiotic (strep throat, pink eye, etc).

Please make sure your student is free from these symptoms for 24 hours before having them return to school.

For more information, please follow the Sick Day Guidelines posted in the attached file.

Ways to help manage symptoms:

  • Practice routine hand hygiene by washing with soap and water frequently

  • Covering the mouth when coughing or nose when sneezing

  • Getting a good night sleep to help boost the immune system

  • STAYING HYDRATED- increase the water intake to help flush germs out;

Please send a water bottle with your student to school everyday!

  • Carry tissues and hand sanitizer

  • Avoid sharing cups and personal items with others

  • Take cold/allergy medicine before coming to school

  • **Please note that the nurse does not carry seasonal allergy medication at school.

You will always get a call from the school nurse if your child is too sick to be in school.
